Cassandra “Elvira” Peterson Doesn’t Mind The “Horny Old Men” Are Unhappy With Her Appearance

Cassandra Peterson is finally living her truth after nearly two decades, but she says that as a result, her social media initially looks like a big hit.

The actress, known to her legions of fans as the horror icon Elvira, has publicly admitted for the first time that she is in a 19-year relationship with her friend Teresa “T” Wierson in her memoir, Cruel to You, Elvira.

Appearing on David Yontef’s podcast Behind the Velvet Rope last week, Peterson said she lost thousands of social media followers shortly after her same-sex relationship became known last fall. However, she was not particularly upset about this drop and suggested that many of these disaffected fans represent a very specific demographic.

“I knew there were lustful old people who just didn’t like the fact that they no longer had a chance with me,” she said. “And I hate telling them they didn’t get a chance with me anyway.”

“Nobody was ready for this,” she continued. “People just said, ‘Elvira, you lied to me. I don’t respect you anymore. Goodbye.'”

Although Peterson said she initially lost about 11,000 subscribers after “Cruel to You Elvira” hit store shelves, she has had around 60,000 new ones since then and is deeply grateful for their support.

A Kansas native, Peterson has enjoyed a sizable LGBT fanbase for decades, and Elvira imitations have become increasingly popular with drag queens every Halloween. Speaking to Yontef, the actress said that she was initially concerned about the negative reactions from her queer followers.

“To be honest, I was more worried about my gay fans,” she said. “Because I hope they accepted it, but I thought, ‘What if they think I’m a big fat hypocrite and I lied to them?”

Fortunately, these fears did not seem to materialize. Peterson was among seven stars to appear on the cover of Out 100’s October issue.

In “Cruel to You, Elvira,” Peterson described how she and Wierson first met at Gold’s Gym in Hollywood, California. The two women quickly became friends, but their relationship began to develop into an affair after Peterson split from husband Mark Pearson in 2003.

“I was stunned that I had been friends with her for so many years and had never noticed our chemistry,” she wrote in the book. “I soon discovered that we had a sexual relationship in a way that I have never experienced.”

“For the first time in my life, I’m with someone with whom I feel safe, blessed and truly loved,” she added.
