CBP: Border Patrol came under fire from Mexico in two separate incidents

SAN DIEGO, Calif. — Border Patrol agents were the target of two separate shootings along the border with San Diego this week, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) confirmed in a press release Friday.

According to CBP, the most recent confrontation occurred on Monday, May 15 at approximately 9:05 p.m. when Border Patrol agents responded to the rescue of an injured 4-year-old boy who allegedly entered the country and dropped him off illegally. Agents reported gunfire from the border fence north of their location and asked San Diego Fire Department paramedics, who were assisting the minor, to take cover from the fire.

Agents said the shots came from south of the border, so assistance was requested from Mexican authorities, while a Customs and Border Protection helicopter offered cover from the air, CBP reported.

Two days earlier, Border Patrol agents were patrolling the San Ysidro Mountains when at approximately 8:37 a.m. an observer reported that he was receiving fire from southwest of his location. Several individuals were seen in the area from the air, and security camera operators reported that one of the subjects had a rifle in his hands.

For its part, the San Diego Fire and Rescue Department informs TELEMUNDO 20 that “SD Fire-Rescue’s leadership met this week with leaders of Customs and Border Protection to ensure all personnel are trained during the response to emergencies in the US.” work together to keep the U.S.-Mexico border safe. CBP reported that due to the incidents, a bipartisan investigation is underway to identify suspects and that more agents have been assigned to the area to protect the border.
