Jaime Hil Tinoco, president of the government, confirmed the objective of the Mexico Roadmap – FICEM initiative: “Towards a Low Carbon Economy”.
He explained that through this mechanism, Mexican society’s energy will strengthen the actions it will carry out in the coming years to reverse climate change and reduce polluting emissions.
He adds that the first to be developed in Mexico is the first heavy industries, so-called industries, and it is important to help limit the increase in global temperatures.
“This 17 percent reduction in the intensity of direct CO2 emissions compared to 2016 levels means that, for each bag of cement produced, we stop generating emissions equivalent to those generated by the average car on a journey of 21.7 kilometers,” he pointed out.
According to Canacem, the reductions in emissions per ton of product from 2016 to 2030 meant that the cement industry in Mexico could stop emitting the same amount of CO2 generated by about one and a half million vehicles.
Tinoco Hill highlighted that in order to achieve the goal of reduction, they mainly carry out two activities, the first of which is in the co-processing of waste, to increase their use up to 32 percent.
While the second action consists of a reduction in the average film content to achieve 66 percent.
According to a report by the global consulting firm Research and Markets, the cement market in Mexico is expected to reach 23.9 billion dollars in 2025, driven by the growth of residential, commercial and industrial construction.
It should be noted that in Mexico, the largest company sector is represented by six companies, together with Canacem, Cementos y Concretos Moctezuma, Cementos Fortaleza, Cemex, Cemento Cruz Azul, Grupo Cementos de Chihuahua and Holcim México.
There are 35 cement plants in the country, and the industry employs more than 19,700 people directly and more than 60,000 indirectly.
It is estimated that 50 million tons of cement are produced annually in Mexico.
