CFE advances in power generation with clean energy

According to state company data, electricity production has progressed over the past two years with clean energy from the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) soon to be included in the energy classification produced at Puerto Peñasco’s photovoltaic park. sound.

Information from the State Electric Company shows that by the first half of last year, production of hydropower, nuclear power – which is considered clean by authorities – as well as geothermal energy, added up to 18.9 percent of the total produced.

The data is higher than in 2020, when electricity generation from the three sources added 18.5 percent, though it was lower than in 2021, when the CFE reported 22.1 percent of the total.

The firm emphasizes that the production through clean energy is explained by the increase in the contribution of hydropower plants.

Energy produced at dams through water power grew from representing 11.4 percent of total CFE production in 2020 to 14.8 percent the following year and to 12.3 percent by the first half of 2022.

In 2020, electricity generation in Laguna Verde, Veracruz, along with nuclear power, contributed 11.4 percent of CFE’s total energy.

The contribution increased to 5.3 per cent in 2021, as against 4.5 per cent in the first half of last year.

Geothermal generation, which is derived from the Earth’s internal heat, remained stable, as it practically did not vary by 2.1 percent in the three-year context.

If wind power generation by independent energy producers (PIE) is added to the CFE, generation from clean sources accounted for 19.6 percent in the first half of last year.

The contribution of wind generated energy to the energy mix of CFE has not shown much variation as it is around 0.8 and 0.7 percent in the three years.

In contrast, the production of electricity with coal, which is one of the most polluting materials because it produces the greatest amount of greenhouse gases, has also seen progress. Energy generation through this source was 6 percent in 2020, while it was reduced to contributing only 4.2 percent of the company’s total electricity the following year.

However, for the first half of 2022, coal-fired power generation is expected to increase, representing 7.1 percent of all generation at the state company.

The CFE reckons greenhouse gas emissions from its coal-fired power plants are set to rise from 22.4 percent in 2021 to 32.8 percent in January-June of last year, as the percentage in conventional thermal and turbogas falls.

However, the state company estimates that the Puerto Peñasco photovoltaic power plant will contribute 1,000 MW to the total electricity generation capacity, although it will provide only 120 MW in its first phase.

In addition, it has other projects such as the rehabilitation of hydroelectric plants and the production of green hydrogen in Puerto Libertad, which will increase electricity production with clean energy in the coming years.
