MIAMI ( Associated Press) – England defender Anton Woakes has died from injuries sustained after being involved in a boating collision off the coast of Miami, officials said Thursday.
Vox, who was 25, was found unconscious and taken to the hospital after the boats collided near Miami Marine Stadium, according to the Florida Wildlife Conservation Commission.
The state unit said in a statement that Vaux was driving one of the boats that were hit.
It was not immediately clear if anyone else was injured. The agency’s investigation was underway.
Woakes was preparing to play his second season with Charlotte FC of the MLS. The club settled in to begin their preseason in Fort Lauderdale on January 9 and was scheduled to face St. Louis on Saturday. The blank was cancelled.
Charlotte FC owner David Tepper said everyone at the club was “devastated by the passing of Anton Woakes.”
Woakes signed with Charlotte for the club’s first season in MLS in 2022. He made 23 appearances in 21 games.
Fans placed bouquets outside the east entrance to the team’s stadium, Bank of America. Jagran was to be held on Thursday night.
Woakes began his career with Tottenham in the English Premier League. He also played for Portsmouth and then signed with Atlanta United in MLS for three seasons.
In 2016, Jose Fernandez, Cuban star pitcher for the Miami Marlins, was killed when his boat crashed in Miami Beach. According to officials, Fernandez and two companions died when their boat crashed into the jetty.
