How popular are the Abbotsford Canucks?
A relatively new method of gauging the popularity of sports teams is Google Trends, which tracks searches for words over a period of time set by Google.
Abbotsford News examined Google Trends data for the Abbotsford Canucks using the term “Abbotsford Canucks” from the day the team launched on July 14, through December 29. Data was collected only from users in British Columbia. That data can be seen below.
The number on the left is a relative value of the data being tested, and in this case a value of 100 equals the day with the highest search volume.
In the case of the Abbotsford Canucks, the term reached its peak on 23 October with a score of 100 – following the team’s home-opener versus the Henderson Silver Knights on 22 October.
The next highest spike was on 14 July – the day the team name was announced. Scored 71 that day and 54 the next day on 15 July.
Other spikes occurred on 27 September and 30 November, with both scoring 56. The Vancouver Canucks held an exhibition game in Abbotsford on September 27, while the home game for the Abbotsford Canucks was against the Ontario Reign on November 30.
Other notable spikes were on 14 November (54) and 15 November (47). The night of November 14 was the Abbotsford Canucks game against the San Jose Barracudas. The top related query for the term is ‘Abbotsford Canucks tickets’.
When you expand the search field for the term across Canada, it turns out that people in Alberta and Manitoba are also searching for the term. The top five related topics for Canadian search include: Tickets – Admissions, Farm Team, Abbotsford Centre, Abbotsford News and Flood.
Expanding the search to worldwide shows related topics including the National Hockey League, Teams and Abbotsford News. Related questions include ‘Vancouver Canucks’ and ‘Abbotsford Canucks roaster’.
Worldwide searches also show that the US states of Arizona, Washington, and California make up the majority of searches south of the border.
However, when compared to established BC Pro sports juggernauts such as the Vancouver Canucks and BC Lions, the new Abbotsford team still lags behind. Those comparisons can be seen in the chart below. This chart is BC. Compares the team in Google Trends
The Vancouver Canucks remain the dominant brand in this chart, which compares the club and its American Hockey League affiliate with other professional teams in BC, including the BC Lions, Vancouver Whitecaps and Vancouver Canadians.
The Vancouver Canucks reached a score of 100 on December 15, the team’s highest search volume compared to other teams on this chart.
The Abbotsford Canucks received their highest relative scores on October 23 (14) and July 14 (10).
The BC Lions had the top score among the teams listed on August 7 (27), August 19 (40), August 29 (16) and November 13 (42). The Whitecaps’ top spike was on November 8, when they reached a score of 17. The Vancouver Canadians remained relatively flat compared to other teams, but received small spikes of four in September and November.
