LONDON ( Associated Press) – Sam Kerr scored her second Women’s FA Cup Final goal in extra time to complete Chelsea’s home double with a 3-2 win over Manchester City on Sunday.
Australia struck from outside the penalty area in the 99th minute to defend the Cup for the West London club in front of a competition record attendance of 49,094 at Wembley Stadium. Emma Hayes’ success came a week after winning her third consecutive Women’s Super League title.
After a lack of clear opportunities, City goalkeeper Ellie Roebuck misjudged her jump to try to collect a long looping ball from Millie Bright and Kerr headed for Chelsea’s opener in the 33rd minute.
Chelsea conceded their first equalizer in the 42nd when Lauren Hemp got away from Bright and sent him the wrong way before touching and curling into the net.
Chelsea took the lead after Roebuck’s poor goal-kick went straight to Erin Cuthbert. An exchange of passes caused the ball to be fed back to her outside the field and she went into the net in the 63rd.
Chelsea were preparing for the trophy ceremony until Hayley Raso deftly beat Chelsea’s offside trap and launched on a well-hit cross from Alex Greenwood before equalizing in the 89th.
Canadian international Jesse Fleming came on for Chelsea in the 80th minute and played the winning goal.
Kerr sealed the win in extra time and overtook City as a player when Alana Kennedy was carried away with a cramp.
Kerr, with Fleming on two-on-one, went ahead and – using the Canadian as a bait – fired the shot that took a massive deflection from Alex Greenwood to Roebuck and went into the back of the net. .
On Saturday, Chelsea’s men lost the FA Cup Final to Liverpool in a penalty shootout at Wembley.
