Chennai: 6 students test COVID-19 positive at Anna University

Just a month after a cluster was detected at IIT Madras, where over 180 students tested positive, six students at the Anna University campus in Guindy have tested positive for COVID-19.

Health Secretary J Radhakrishnan and other senior officials of the Health Department visited the campus on Tuesday and monitored the measures taken to contain the spread of the virus. A total of 40 samples were tested and six of them have come positive so far, officials said.

Addressing reporters, Radhakrishnan said that Chennai still has active cases registered around Adyar, Teynampet, Anna Nagar and Perungudi areas.

“There was a cultural program at Anna University. When a woman who attended the event had some symptoms and was tested, she was found to be Covid-19 positive. Those who experience any kind of Covid-19 symptoms should get tested immediately instead of doing any self-test for three-four days as we have many facilities and some of them are free,” he said. said.

Radhakrishnan said he has directed the health department to conduct tests on those who are symptomatic. “We have asked officials to increase testing in some areas inside Anna University. Step by step, we will do the saturation test.”

The Health Secretary said that about 43.96 lakh people have not taken the first dose of the vaccine and 1.22 crore people have not been given the second dose of the vaccine.

In the last 24 hours, the state recorded 35 new Covid-19 cases, taking the total caseload to 34,54,925. With zero deaths, the toll stood at 38,025. A total of 32 patients were discharged leaving 331 active cases.

Meanwhile, Radhakrishnan on Monday also wrote to all District Collectors and Greater Chennai Corporation Commissioner about the preventive steps that are required in view of the recent Monkeypox virus spread in UK, USA, Australia, Canada etc. In a statement, Radhakrishnan mentioned that he had received an advisory from the National Center for Disease Control (NCDC) on monkeypox and was sharing it.
