CHICAGO – Chico State announced Tuesday that Matthew Dillon, the interim police chief of the University Police Department, will retire Dec. 31.
Chico State President Gail Hutchinson on Tuesday thanked Dillon in an email to faculty and staff for a nearly three-decade career with the University of California system.
Dillon took on the role on an interim basis after the head of the university police department, John Reid, announced his retirement in late 2020. The search for the new chief began on Feb 1, 2020, and an external search agency was hired and a campus search committee was convened. The Campus Search Chair works with an external search firm to update the details of the position of the head of the University Police Department, which was then posted on March 2, 2020. Due to the epidemic, Reed postponed his retirement date until the end of June 2020.
Hutchinson said in a June 1, 2020, letter to the Chico State community that he decided to change the appointment of the university police chief from permanent to a two-year interim appointment after hearing from campus leaders.
“Vice President Ann Sherman and I had the opportunity to speak with the original authors of the Campus Community Letter on June 1, 2020. We had a respectful and direct exchange that deepened my understanding of the concerns raised by your numbers. I have also gained a broad understanding of the work that lies ahead of us, ”Hutchinson said in the letter.
Dillon was appointed on an interim basis in 2020 and was vice-president of the Presidential Task Force to examine the university’s police policy and practice.
“(Dillon) has provided his skills in law enforcement leadership and he has shown how much he values diversified perspectives,” Hutchinson said in a letter addressed to faculty and staff on Tuesday. “During this time, he helped the university work through the epidemic and established a strong partnership with the Chico Police Department.”
In Dillon’s last three months as chief, Hutchinson said Dillon would help Chico State evaluate and implement the task force’s key recommendations.
Chico State will announce a national search for a new police chief, and Hutchinson said the university will invite the campus community to comment on job descriptions.
