Chile lags behind in renaming the first female post

SANTIAGO ( Associated Press) — President Gabriel Boric’s government on Wednesday scrapped a controversial proposal that would eliminate the name “First Lady’s cabinet” and replace it with “Irina Karamanos cabinet,” the name of the president’s companion. .

The march resolution was issued a day earlier and the privatization of the situation immediately drew criticism from the centre-right opposition. The conservative Independent Democratic Union, the UDI, went to the Comptroller’s Office to rule on the legality of what it described as an “abuse of power” and “unconstitutional and arbitrary resolution”.

The government’s spokeswoman, Camila Vallejo, blamed it for an “administrative error” and that links to “Irina Karamanos’s cabinet” were removed from the government’s website during the day.

The new proposal speaks of the social functions of the position and calls it the “Sociocultural Coordinator of the Presidency of the Republic”, who will remain in charge of the six foundations.

Karamanos wrote on his Twitter account that “With the belief that we do not want the name in the resolution to distract us from the profound changes we are promoting, the resolution has been amended.”

The left-wing coalition that brought Boric to power on March 11 is critical of the situation, and Karamanos herself said in January that she would take office “with a commitment to improving what is traditionally called the First Lady”. It has to change, she said, “replicate it, and that means changing the relationship with power and changing the way we see the relationship between women in power and politics.”
