Chilean Journalist Shot Dead During May Day Protests

A journalist who was shot during May Day protests in the Chilean capital Santiago died on Thursday, a hospital official said, as the country’s president promised there would be no “punishment”. .

The death of Francesca Sandoval, 30, was also confirmed in a statement to the online community outlet for which she wrote.

“Francisca didn’t leave us. They killed her,” wrote Senel 3 de la Victoria site, without specifying who he held responsible for his death.

“We will miss you and we will do everything we can to tell the truth,” it added.

On May 1, Sandoval was shot in the head during violent clashes on the sidelines of a union protest organized on the occasion of International Workers’ Day. Two other people were also injured by the bullets.

In a statement, Daniel Rodriguez, the head of intensive care at the hospital, said Sandoval died of a brain hemorrhage caused by a gunshot wound.

Last week, three alleged perpetrators of the shooting were arrested and the man suspected of shooting Sandoval was held in pre-trial custody for murder and illegally possessing a firearm.

Left-wing President Gabriel Boric expressed his condolences to Sandoval’s family in a tweet on Thursday afternoon and pledged “not to allow punishment” for the crime.

Following the news of Sandoval’s death, several vigils were held in the capital with candles and photographs of the journalist.

Following the news, some groups erected barricades and cut off traffic in the Plaza de Italia, the epicenter of the 2019 “social outbreak” protest movement in the center of Santiago.
