China as the top technological superpower according to the report

According to the report, China is already ahead of the US on 37 of 44 key points

A report released Thursday by the Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI) indicates that China is a leader in future research technology performance, cementing its position as the world’s scientific superpower above the United States.

According to the report “ASPI Key Technology Tracker: The Kind of Global Power of the Future”, China leads 37 out of 44 key technologies for innovation and growth, in areas such as defense, space exploration, robotics, biotechnology, quantum technology and artificial intelligence. The study also notes that China’s leadership in research positions it to excel in developing current technologies as well as those that do not yet exist.

In this context, the authors of the report advocate greater cooperation and encouragement of research by “popular peoples” in order to prevent China from gaining hegemony in the supply of key network technologies. The ASPI report, which analyzed 2.2 million academic articles among the 10% most cited in 44 types of technology, highlights that, according to them, the Chinese Communist Party uses “coercive techniques” that are against the global order to punish governments and companies. .

According to research, the United States leads China in seven of the 44 technologies, including fields such as semiconductor design and development, as well as computers and vaccines, while other countries are far behind in all areas.

Other nations that are powers

According to the report, Britain and India are ranked next in research, among the top five countries in 29 of the 44 technologies studied. Meanwhile, South Korea and Germany are in the top five places at 20 and 17 respectively.

The report also highlights the advantages of the convergence of the European Union (EU), due to the ease of movement of researchers in the Schengen area, the presence of leading institutions such as the Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands, and the strengths of quantum technology. . On the other hand, ASPI indicates that countries like Spain and Turkey “are often in the top 10 countries, but not in the top five”. Spanish research stands out in sub-areas such as integrated circuits, advanced radiofrequency.

Latin America: Mexico, Chile and Brazil

In addition, the report highlights talent and research in Latin America, mentioning Brazil and Mexico in areas such as biofuels, bio-based manufacturing, key minerals and advanced analytics. On the other hand, Chile appears on the list in specific areas such as explosives and advanced industrial materials.

The study also highlights that China is attracting more and more talent to its universities, boasting seven of the top 10 advanced aircraft engineering research institutes, including hypersonics. However, the authors of the report acknowledge that leading in research does not always translate into successful development and manufacturing, as has happened with some of the Chinese aero-acro machines.

In addition, the presence of the United States in the development of cutting-edge technologies such as ChatGPT in artificial intelligence is highlighted, as well as leading technology companies such as Google, Microsoft, Facebook and Hewlett Packard Enterprise.
