China sanctions 2 Americans after US measures

BEIJING ( Associated Press) – China has banned two Americans in retaliation for US crackdowns on human rights abuses in Tibet amid a standoff between the two countries over Beijing’s treatment of religious and ethnic minorities.

Members of his close family, including Todd Stein and Miles Yu Maochun, have been banned from entering China, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Friday.

It states that any assets he has in China will be confiscated and he is banned from communicating with people or organizations inside China.

According to the notice, the measures were in response to sanctions imposed on two Chinese nationals by the United States “under the guise of a human rights issue in Tibet”. At present, it was not possible to contact anyone to give a statement.

On 9 December, the United States imposed sanctions on Wu Yingjie, the top official in Tibet from 2016 to 2021, and Zhang Hongbo, the region’s police chief since 2018.

In announcing the sanctions, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said, “Our actions are aimed at deterring and deterring the People’s Republic of China from arbitrarily detaining or physically mistreating members of religious minority groups in the Tibet Autonomous Region.” “

The US Treasury Department said in an accompanying note that Wu was responsible for “stability policies” in Tibet that included “serious human rights abuses, including extrajudicial killings, physical abuse, arbitrary arrests and mass detentions.”

He said that during Zhang’s tenure, the police committed “serious human rights abuses, including torture, physical abuse, and killing of prisoners,” including those detained for religious and political reasons.

China did not make specific allegations against Stein and Yu in its announcement.
