A problem has arisen in China, which China will have to work hard to deal with. Actually, China’s population is growing rapidly and young Chinese are not willing to get married, due to which the young population is shrinking. The number of Chinese Millennials (young people born in the late 90s) is increasing and this class believes in not marrying or avoiding it.
According to a CNN report, according to data released by the National Bureau of Statistics of China, there has been a 41 percent decline in the number of people getting married for the first time in the last six years. This number was 2.38 crores in 2013, which decreased to 1.39 crores in 2019. This decline has occurred due to decades of policies designed to limit China’s population growth. This means that there is very little youth population to marry in China. On the other hand, the opinion of youth about marriage is also changing, especially of young women.
One child policy is heavy on China
In 2019, the rate of marriage in China was 6.6 per 1000 people, a decline of 33 per cent over 2013. It was the lowest in the last 14 years. Chinese authorities told the reason behind this, ‘One Child Policy’. In 1979, the Chinese government brought the One Child Policy to control the country’s population. Due to this policy, the working population of the country started shrinking in 2014. This acted as an alarm to the Chinese leaders and the very next year China announced a ban on One Child Policy. The government said that from 1 January 2016, the One Child Policy was completely abolished. But still the marriage and birth rate kept falling.
Socio-economic change also played a major role
Marriage rates have not declined in China only due to demographic, but now in China, women have become more educated and economically independent. In fact, in 1990, the Chinese government made nine years of education compulsory. With this, girls living in poor areas also reached schools. At the same time, in 1999, the government expanded into higher education. Due to these decisions of the government, women started getting higher education. In 2016, women began outshining men in higher education programs. The number of female students in the college increased to 52.5 per cent and the number of them to 50.6 per cent in post graduation. Higher education gave women financial freedom and their attitude towards marriage changed. However, Chinese society is still patriarchal, so women feel that if they marry, they will have to spend their life in the kitchen.
Worried China government is taking these steps
Due to the constantly declining population, the Chinese government is worried and now it has started taking steps. But to make people aware, China is still resorting to propaganda. Propaganda is being spread by the Chinese media that the birth of a child is not only a family issue, but it is also an issue of the country. People are being asked to give birth to two children in cities and villages. The government wants to have new children, so that the population remains young. Now the Two Child Policy has been introduced in China, in addition, the provincial governments have extended maternity leave of more than 98 days to 190 days as per national standards. Some cities also started giving cash grants to couples with a second child. The Communist Youth League, the youth wing of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), has been entrusted with the responsibility of getting married, who are getting a blind date so that people can get their soul mate.
