Chinese Government launches global campaign to recruit talent to counter Western narratives

The Chinese Communist regime’s overseas English speaking tube media CGTN (China Global Television Network) has just completed a two-month global recruitment campaign of global media talents and influencers on social media to produce Beijing’s anti-Western narrative ‘propaganda. The state-backed media offer rich incentives to attract young participants and draw their attention to Western university students, who warn international media and communities.

In April, CGTN launched the “Media Challengers” campaign to call in reporters, presenters, DJs, podcasters and influencers on social media worldwide who report in English. According to the official website, the campaign ‘aims to inspire young people from all over the world’ and aims to ‘inject new power into international communication under the environment of media convergence’. Participants must upload a three-minute video of any genre, whether they are a “foodie, techie, makeup guru, sports fanatic, or anything else”.

The state-run media offers up to $ 10,000 to winners and free professional training to finalists. It also offers winners, part-time or full-time jobs, at ‘CGTN’s headquarters in Beijing and three regional production centers in Washington, London and Nairobi.’ In addition, the winners are invited to participate in CGTN’s coverage of the ancient Silk Road from 2021 to 2022. “

Western youth target

On YouTube videos about the campaign, young participants from Western and African countries as well as Chinese students are studying abroad. In addition, the British media The Times reported that CGTN is targeting British universities because several university students and local media influencers are among the participants.

The report warned that if an influence on Western social media had read out China’s official rule on specific issues, domestic audiences might believe the Chinese Communist Party. [CCP] is admired by international audiences. ”

The China Research Group in the UK has posted a tweet saying that the global influencers and vloggers recruited by CGTN will promote China and counter Western stories that are damaging its image. ‘The group also noted that the CCP’s official overseas mouthpiece is aimed at British university students.

The British diplomatic think tank Henry Jackson Society commented on the Twitter account of the CGTN recruitment campaign, saying: “No self-respecting university may allow such propaganda equipment to be recruited on its campus.”

U.S.-based current affairs commentator He Qinglian wrote in an opinion piece for The Epoch Times that the CCP’s overseas propaganda policy – commonly known as large-scale foreign propaganda – involved large amounts of manpower and money to spread the CCP’s story and ideology abroad. . in order to achieve its goal of telling China’s story – like the CCP. “She pointed out that CGTN used attractive salaries and modern facilities to recruit foreigners to work at its media centers in the United States, the United Kingdom and Africa. In 2018, in its West London-only office, there were 6 000 local applicants who competed for the 90 vacancies in the media.

CGTN’s broadcasting license in Europe was revoked in 2020 by British regulator Ofcom because the content is directly controlled by the CCP, and to broadcast forced TV confessions from dissidents, including British citizen Peter Humphrey. However, France renewed its license so that CGTN could broadcast its programs in Europe, which led to disinformation being spread throughout the country.

In 2021, the French media exposed Le Monde CGTN for using a non-existent French journalist to publish fake news about Uyghurs in Xinjiang, thus whitening the genocide of the minority group by the communist government.
