Chronology of what happened during the political crisis in Peru

LIMA ( Associated Press) – Here’s a brief timeline of Peru’s political crisis that led to the ouster of a president and the imposition of a police state:

-Wednesday, December 14, 2022: Peru’s defense minister declares a 30-day nationwide state of emergency, imposing a police state, amid violent protests against the ouster of President Pedro Castillo. A seventh person died from injuries sustained during the demonstrations. In response to demands that elections be held immediately, new President Dina Boluaarte proposed holding elections in December 2023, four months earlier than her previous proposal.

-Tuesday, December 13, 2022: A judge orders Castillo, 53, to remain in custody, rejecting his appeal, while authorities build a rebellion case against the leader of the rural teachers’ union whose presidential victory celebration Poor and indigenous people were celebrated by Peruvians, who feel their problems have been ignored for too long.

Monday, December 12, 2022: The governments of Mexico, Argentina, Colombia and Bolivia are in favor of Castillo.

-Saturday, December 10, 2022: Boluaarte, 60, is sworn in before 17 cabinet members, whom he promises not to corrupt. She is the first woman to rule Peru.

-Friday, December 9, 2022: Protesters demand Castillo’s release, Congress shutdown and Bolluarte’s removal from office. The president says Castillo should be allowed to remain in office for the remaining three and a half years of his term.

-Thursday, December 8, 2022: President Joe Biden’s government condemns the takeover of Castillo, saying it was illegal, and supports Bolluarte’s call for a government of national unity.

-Wednesday, December 7, 2022: Castillo’s 17-month presidency ends during an attempted show of strength. Castillo attempted to dissolve Congress before a third attempt by lawmakers to impeach him. In response, MPs ousted him from office and swore in his deputy as his successor. Castillo has been arrested on charges of insurrection as Boluaarte becomes the sixth person to rule the country in the last six years.
