Senator Rick Scott (Florida RR) hedged repeatedly on Sunday as MSNBC’s Chuck Todd asked him to explain why so many Republicans falsely believe the 2020 election was stolen.
Scott, a Donald Trump supporter who voted to overturn the 2020 election results in favor of the former president, was asked about a recent MSNBC poll that found only 22% of Republicans believe President Joe Biden was legally elected. “Why?” Todd asked.
“I can tell you that Joe Biden is president. We went through the constitutional process and, as you know, he was elected, ”said Scott. “Now I really think that buyers have a lot of remorse,” he added, criticizing Biden for inflation and his withdrawal from Afghanistan.
“I understand what you’re talking about,” Todd interrupted, “but why — then you’re part of the 22% who think he was legally elected. Why don’t four out of five Republicans believe it? “
“You have to ask them,” Scott said, without mentioning the fact that Trump and his allies in politics and right-wing media have been constantly spreading misinformation and doubting the election and uprising in the year since the vote.
“I think Joe Biden was elected president,” Scott continued. “I think, but you know what we need to do right now, we need to figure out how we can start helping these families, because I can tell you this is not happening in Washington.”
“Senator, I think we both know the reason for this,” Todd said. “And let me tell you what the former president published on October 21st. Not six months ago. This is about three weeks ago. “
In a statement on October 21, Trump tried to justify the deadly January 6 riot at the US Capitol, stating: “The uprising took place on November 3, election day. On January 6 there was a protest. “
“Is there part of this statement that you agree with?” Todd asked the Senator.
Scott did not answer the question, but instead turned to criticizing the Democrats for focusing on Trump and saying that the Republicans will win in the medium term of 2022, “because we are going to talk about the problems.” We will not talk about the last elections. “
Trump, whose influence continues to dominate the GOP, continues to talk aggressively about the latest elections and raise funds for them.
“But do you not think that it is a mistake to declare what the former president is telling a lie?” Todd asked, adding, “Why didn’t former President Trump give in?”
“I think you should ask President Trump,” Scott replied.
After a lengthy discussion of the topic, Todd asked the Senator, “Are you not at all concerned that former President Trump is helping to create a false version that something is wrong with our election?”
Scott did not answer this question and said that he is focused on how to win in 2022.
