SYDNEY ( Associated Press) – Former US Open champion Marin Cilic defeated American Tommy Paul 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 on Thursday to reach the semi-finals of the second Adelaide International.
Croatia’s fourth-seeded Cilic has four wins from five matches this year and also reached the semi-finals of the Adelaide International earlier last week, losing to Karen Khachanov of Russia. Cilic hit 14 aces in Paul’s eight and won 84 percent of first-served points.
Paul was also in solid form in Thursday’s match, winning 12 of his last 14 matches. Paul defeated compatriot Frances Tiafoe in the first round this week and reached the quarter-finals with a 6-4, 7-6 (6) win over Benjamin Bonzi.
Cilic beat Jame Munar 7-6(6), 6-2 to reach the last eight.
In the women’s draw, third seed Coco Gauff defeated Anna Konjuh of Croatia 6-3, 6-4 to reach the last four.
At the Sydney Tennis Classic, fourth seed Annette Kontaveit of Estonia took the first set of her quarter-final against Tunisia’s Ons Jabur, before Jabur was forced to retire with a lower back injury.
The pair had been on the court for almost an hour and Kontaveit, who had lost twice to Jaboor last year, won the first set 6-4. Jabeur started serving in the second set after retiring.
“I really hope Ones is going to be fine for next week and it’s nothing serious,” Kontaveit said. “The first set was really competitive and we have played some tough matches before but she has always been on top. I was really happy to have the set and I was playing like I was playing. ,
Kontaveit will now face third seed Barbora Krejcikova, who defeated France’s Caroline Garcia 6-0, 6-2.
In the men’s section, top seed Aslan Karatsev defeated fifth seed Lorenzo Sonego 6-2, 3-6, 6-2.
