Clubber excels again at Globe Life Field as Ray beat Rangers

Arlington, Texas ( Associated Press) — Corey Kluber excelled again at Globe Life Field, notching up six solid innings as the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Texas Rangers 3-1 on Thursday.

In his previous appearance at the ballpark, Kluber threw a no-hitter with the New York Yankees on May 19, 2021 in Texas.

In his only other game at Globe Life Field, which opened during the pandemic-delayed season in July 2020, he left after an innings and 18 pitches in his only debut as a Rangers member. He tore a muscle in his pitching shoulder and was lost for the rest of that year.

Kluber allowed one run and four hits, taking four of the four hits and none running. The two-time AL Cy Young Award winner tallied his longest outing of the season.

Kluber said he didn’t think about that no-hitter during the afternoon.

“Maybe the fact that it was the fourth game in the series and all my stuff got out of the way whether it was memories or memories or whatever it was early on, not really,” Kluber said.

Vidal Bruijn hit an RBI double in the second innings and Yandy Diaz scored a run in the third for Tampa Bay.

Bruijn, in his second major league season, made his first major league debut at shortstop, with Vander Franco on the injured list. Bruijn’s four assists without an error included all three outs in the bottom of the ninth, making deep stops in some holes and long throws.

Rays manager Kevin Cash said, “The first ones at the big league level make you wonder how it’s going.” “He couldn’t have been better.”

The Rays won the last two games of the four-game Road Series, repeating what they did at Yankee Stadium in their previous series, to earn a split, and came back in a season-best nine games of over .500.

Rangers have made two straight losses after reaching .500 for the first time since May 2021.

Kluber (2-2)’s lone run was a two-out, first-pitch home run by Marcus Semien, who was pulled down the left-field line in the sixth.

Ryan Thompson, the fifth Ray reliever, took a perfect ninth for his third save in six occasions this season.

Diaz, Manuel Margot and Harold Ramirez each had two hits for the Rays. Margot hit base four times after coming hitless in her last 12 at-bats.

Semien’s homer was his second of the season in his last six games, after being homeless in his first 43 games this season. He scored 45 runs for Toronto last season, the most for a primary second baseman in the Majors.

Taylor Hearn (3-4) gave all three Rays six hits and four walks. Five consecutive Rays reached base in the third innings of two runs, during which Hearn scored three runs. Texas manager Chris Woodward said Hearn pitched while ill.

Rangers dropped two runners in the seventh and eighth innings and scored 1 for 7 on aggregate with the runners in the scoring position. Josh Smith was the first survivor, who doubled from the lead, but never got ahead.

“Kluber was tough,” said Woodward, who was Kluber’s manager in 2020. “We had a chance early …

Jonah Heim doubled and singled for Texas. He tried to stretch his fourth-inning drive into a right-field corner with no double, but was thrown out on the fly by Margot by a wide margin.

Remembering PK on Lou Gehrig’s Day

At the Major’s second annual Lou Gehrig Day, Ray remembered Paul Kirsch. His former senior Scouting supervisor was diagnosed with ALS in 2018 and died last September at the age of 65 from complications following a COVID-19 infection despite vaccination.

“The PK was considered so high by so many people in our organization,” Cash said.

Rays: LHP Shane McClanahan (5-2, 2.01 ERA) will begin a four-game winning streak against the Chicago White Sox and RHP Vince Velasquez (2-3, 5.30) in the first match of a three-match home series on Friday night .

Rangers: RHP Dan Dunning (1-3, 4.31) is 0-2 in his last five starts and will face Seattle RHP Logan Gilbert (5-2, 2.29) as Texas continues a seven-game homestand on Friday night .
