CNBC: It’s The Most Stressful Job In America; Pays $208,000 per year

There are many stressful jobs in the world of work: anesthesiologist assistant, judge, telephone operator…

The Occupational Information Network, or O*NET, part of the Department of Labor, ranked 873 of them using this particular metric. He did this by pointing out the importance of accepting criticism and calmly handling high-stress situations in every job.

When it comes to the top 10, “one thing remains the same,” says Sinam Buber, principal economist at ZipRecruiter. It’s the “importance of the decisions they must make every day. These are all high-stakes decisions.”

That’s certainly the case with the job that ranks highest on that list, urologist. Urologists examine patients’ genitourinary systems to diagnose or treat diseases and disorders such as erectile dysfunction, infertility, incontinence, bladder cancer, and prostate cancer. They also perform surgery on these areas of the body.

This job requires extensive schooling, a medical license, and experience to be hired. The job was ranked out of 100 out of 100 in terms of stress level.

There can be many reasons for this level of stress. One is the level of precision it demands. An overwhelming majority, 97% of urologists surveyed by O*NET said that being accurate and precise on the job is “extremely important”. As Buber said, the stakes are high when you make a mistake.

Another is the intimate nature of the body parts these medical professionals treat. Buber says, “Physical proximity is too much.” “And a lot of your patients are very sensitive about it.”

Dr. Eduardo Sanchez, medical director of prevention for the American Heart Association, doesn’t stop talking about the steps we need to take to control stress and have good heart health.

Historically, a large proportion of urologists have faced allegations of malpractice. According to a 1998 study published in the journal “Urology,” 77% of 110 urologists on the Best Doctors in America list had been sued.

“They’re always in the top five doctors who get sued,” Buber says. This is likely to increase the pressure further.

Regardless of its stress level, this job is one of the highest paying and most stressful on the list. According to O*NET, urologists earn an average of $208,000 per year. Next on the list, film editing, brings in an average of $62,680 per year.

“I think this shows that there can be highly stressful jobs that run the full spectrum of salary,” says Vicki Salemi, career expert at Monster. “It’s not just an endorsement.”
