NEW YORK – CNN fired host Chris Cuomo on Saturday after details emerged about how he helped his brother, former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, when the politician faced sexual harassment charges earlier this year.
Earlier this week, the network suspended Chris Cuomo to investigate his behavior after the New York attorney general released details showing that he was more involved than previously thought in helping other journalists strategize and reach out to other journalists as his brother fought to keep his job.
CNN hired a law firm for the review. The firm has recommended firing Chris Cuomo, and CNN chief Jeff Zucker told the host of his decision on Saturday.
The network said that “additional information was found during this review.” CNN did not discuss this information and did not characterize whether it had anything to do with his brother.
“It goes without saying that these decisions are not easy, and there are many complex factors involved,” Zucker said in an email to CNN on Saturday.
Cuomo issued a statement on Twitter, calling the decision disappointing.
“I don’t want my time at CNN to end this way, but I’ve already told you why and how I helped my brother. So let me say, as regrettable as it is, I couldn’t be more proud of the Cuomo Prime Time team and the work we did as CNN’s # 1 show in the most competitive time slot, ”he said.
When the women accused former Governor Andrew Cuomo of sexual harassment, his brother, despite being a CNN host, began to demand information from sources about the accusers and report to the governor’s administration about what he learned.
According to the emails and transcripts of his testimony to investigators working for Attorney General Laetitia James, he was actively involved in developing their response to the allegations. Her office found that Andrew Cuomo had been sexually harassed by at least 11 women.
Chris Cuomo previously admitted to talking to his brother and giving advice when the governor faced harassment charges. But more detailed information appeared about the assistance he provided. Andrew Cuomo stepped down in August to avoid a likely impeachment trial.
