Coach: Tua suffered a concussion in the game against the Packers

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. ( Associated Press) – Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa suffered his second injury of the season in last week’s loss to the Miami Dolphins at Green Bay, head coach Mike McDaniel said.

It hasn’t been officially ruled out that Tagovailoa could play in Sunday’s crucial game against New England, though it’s unknown whether the Dolphins will get him back on the field this season.

McDaniel said Miami is considering using Teddy Bridgewater as the starter.

The NFL and the players union conducted a joint review of whether the concussion protocol was applied in Tagovailoa’s case.

League spokesman Brian McCarthy said, “We support that review and as we have done in the past, we will report the results with the NFL Players Association.”

McDaniel said Tagovailoa was at the Dolphins facility on Wednesday but would not provide details on how he is doing.

He only said that he was “better than yesterday.”

Tagovailoa appeared to hit the back of his head on the ground when he was sacked in the second quarter against the Packers. However, he never left the game and was not evaluated for a concussion.

McDaniel said Monday that the team saw nothing unusual during the game, enough to believe Tagovailoa had suffered a concussion. Instead, both the coach and the team were concerned when they noticed some “inconsistency” on Tagovailoa’s part during his review of video of Sunday’s game.

The quarterback met with doctors Monday afternoon, who placed him on the NFL’s concussion protocol after reporting symptoms.

Tagovailoa, 24 and in only his third season as a professional, has suffered two confirmed injuries since the start of the season.

He came under concussion protocol in September after he suffered a concussion during Miami’s game at Cincinnati that left him unconscious. He was carried off the field on a stretcher, and returned for 7 weeks.

He suffered another heavy blow four days before the game against Cincinnati in a win over Buffalo. He appeared to show signs of shock, but was assessed and allowed to remain in the meeting, drawing criticism.

The NFL later changed its concussion protocol, dictating that any player displaying potential symptoms—including signs of loss of balance or stability—avoid playing for the remainder of the game.
