Colombia rejects Cuba’s classification as a state sponsor of terrorism – Nation World News

Colombian Foreign Minister lvaro Leyva rejected the United States’ decision to put Cuba on the list of states that sponsor terrorism, saying the opposite, it is a land of peace, the agencies report.

Leva, who arrived in Cuba on Thursday, highlighted the island’s role in the peace process with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), which culminated in agreements on the disarmament of guerrillas in 2016.

For his part, Cuba’s foreign minister, Bruno Rodriguez, said that the “cost and humanitarian consequences are incalculable”.

“Cuba is a country that promotes peace, which over the years has contributed in a modest and selfless way to the pursuit and achievement of the much-loved and needed peace for Sister Colombia,” he concluded.

Last May, Joe Biden’s government placed Cuba on the list along with Venezuela.

Leva expressed that the Colombian government “desires to resume dialogue (with the National Liberation Army) in this land of peace to begin the path proposed by President Gustavo Petro”.

Leva traveled to Cuban territory with the High Commissioner for Peace Danilo Rueda and Senator Ivan Cepeda.

Colombian government talks with the ELN began in 2017 during the government of Juan Manuel Santos in Quito, and were transferred to Havana in 2018, after which they were suspended by the government of Iván Duque.

Petro has said that it wants to resume the protocol already established in the talks to resume “ELN talks there (in Havana)”, but that it should be the government of Cuba that will re-sponsor the talks. As well as Norway its role as guarantor or add new countries for this purpose.

In this sense, Petro has also stated that “Spain has expressed provisions to assist in the Colombian peace process”, in line with the offer that Chile also made to host the talks.

ELN in favor of reactivating talks for peace

The ELN’s top commander, Elicer Harlinto Chamorro, aka “Antonio García,” said in an interview with CM & Newscast published this week, that peace talks should resume to the point where they were stalled.

“The one who broke it (peace talks) was the Duke’s government, now the new government and the Colombian state should be safe from the said violation. That’s the basics. So, (it should be) the early to resume the talks.” Point,” said the guerrilla chief.

The ELN, which has strengthened in recent years, has already shown in various communiques that it wants to return to the negotiating table to seek peace with the Petro government.
