Commanders fine defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio

Washington Commanders defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio was fined $100,000 by the club for his comments on the protests following the death of George Floyd at the hands of police and the Jan. 6 assault on Capitol Hill.

Coach Ron Rivera announced the penalty in a statement Friday after a meeting with Del Rio earlier in the day. He said Del Rio’s remarks hurt members of the local community and do not reflect the organization’s views.

On Wednesday, when asked to comment on a message he had posted on social media during the week, Del Rio downplayed the deadly insurrection and questioned why the summer 2020 mobilizations after Floyd’s death did not have the same level of questioning.

Del Rio called the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection “a minor altercation on Capitol Hill,” though he later apologized for that comment.

“He understands the difference between the events of that dark day and peaceful protests, a hallmark of our democracy,” Rivera said in a statement, noting that Del Rio has a constitutional right to express his opinion.

“Words have consequences and theirs hurt a lot of people in our community. I want to make it clear that our organization will not tolerate any comparison between those who demanded justice for the murder of George Floyd and the actions of those who tried to overthrow our government on January 6.”

Rivera said he was convinced that after their conversation, Del Rio “will have a greater understanding of the consequences of his words and the values that our team stands for.”

According to Rivera, the money will be donated to the United States Capitol Police Tribute Fund.

Del Rio, 59, is leading the Washington defense for the third season under Rivera’s leadership and during this period has shared his conservative views on social media numerous times.

A tweet posted Monday night raised questions about Del Rio after an offseason workout. Between them, he wondered if he cared how thoughts of him fell to the players, most of whom are black.

“If they meet and want to talk about it, I would do it with anyone,” Del Rio said. “But that’s not the case. I only express my ideas and I believe that all of us, as Americans, have the right to express ourselves, especially if it is respectful. I am respectful”.
