CONCACAF Women’s: Costa Rica and Canada win tickets to the Women’s World Cup

MONTERREY ( Associated Press) – Costa Rica and Canada recorded respective victories over Trinidad and Tobago and Panama in the CONCACAF W Championship to secure their tickets to the 2023 World Cup.

Julia Grosso scored a touchdown in the 64th minute to give the Canadians a victory over the Panamanians.

Canada, who won the gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics, dominated the canaleras but could not overcome them until Grosso scored his third goal of the championship.

Earlier, with two goals from Cristin Granados, Costa Rica beat Trinidad and Tobago 4-0.

Granados scored in the 18th and 44th minute for the Costa Ricans, who all but qualified for a World Cup for only the second time in their history, the first since 2015. Later, the Canadian victory secured passage.

Lauryn Hutchinson scored an own goal at 33 and Katherine Alvarado closed the score at 48 for Costa Rica.

Trinidadians finished the game with 10 points after Kedie Johnson was sent off on the 22nd for a second yellow card.

In the other group, the United States qualified for the World Cup the day before, beating Jamaica 5-0, which will hit another straight pass on Monday, when they face Haiti.

The Mexican hosts face the Americans in the final group meeting in search of a seemingly impossible pass to a playoff.

Eight teams were divided into two groups in the W Championship. The top two teams in each group qualify for the World Cup. Third-place teams advance to the intercontinental playoffs in February.

The W Championship winner also earns a spot at the 2024 Olympics in France.
