The working committee of the Congress party is to meet today or on Friday. Assembly elections and party internal elections to be held in four states can be considered in the meeting. Both parties of the party will be watching this meeting. The first camp was of senior leaders, including 23 leaders, who wrote a letter to Sonia Gandhi in August demanding major changes in the party, and the second camp was of the young leaders of pro-Rahul Gandhi.
Leaders seeking a change in the party say that they are waiting how the meeting is decided on the issues raised by them. One of the leaders who wrote a letter to Sonia Gandhi in August told Hindustan Times, “We also want to talk on the Bihar election results in the CWC meeting.” The performance of the Congress party in Bihar elections was very disappointing. The party contested 70 seats and won only 19 seats.
Demand for young leaders – Rahul Gandhi becomes president again
At the same time, some young leaders of the Congress say that they can demand again that CWC should choose Rahul Gandhi as the next party chief. The CWC, the supreme executive body of the Congress, can appoint an interim president before the election of the regular president by the All India Congress Committee (AICC). However, Rahul Gandhi has not given any indication that he once again wants to return to the post which he had left after the bitter defeat of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
“We have asked him (Rahul Gandhi) several times in the last few months, but he has not given any indication of becoming the president,” the report quoted a party leader as saying. In such a situation, if the issue of organizational elections for the post of party chief arises in the meeting, then the CWC can also decide whether the plenary session of AICC should be called or the voting can be held at the level of state units only.
It is necessary to conduct internal elections of the party before February
In the month of April-May this year, Assembly elections are due in four states – Tamil Nadu, Kerala, West Bengal and Assam – and the Union Territory of Puducherry. At least two members of the CWC say that in such a situation, the party should complete the internal elections before February, so that the new team has full time to prepare for the assembly elections of four states. The Congress is far from power in these four states.
