Construction has begun on a new housing development in the Bronx

NEW YORK – On Friday, Governor Cathy Hochul and Mayor Eric Adams announced that construction has begun on a $72 million affordable housing development in the Fordham Heights section of the Bronx.

The new development, to be called Bedford Green House II, will create 46 affordable apartments for families and seniors, and 70 supportive apartments for the homeless. The development will also feature a 2,300-square-foot medical clinic that will provide services to residents and the surrounding community.

“With this milestone, we are one step closer to delivering hundreds of units of affordable and supportive housing to families, seniors and the homeless in the Bronx,” said Governor Hochul. “As our state continues to face a severe housing shortage, essential projects, such as the Bedford Green development, are critical to ensuring that all New Yorkers have a safe, stable and affordable place to call home. housing crisis and I look forward to working with Mayor Adams and other state and local partners to provide affordable housing for all.”

Bedford Green House II is part of Governor Hochul’s broader plans to make housing more affordable, equitable and sustainable. Bedford Green House II will consist of a newly constructed seventeen-story building located at 2880 Jerome Avenue. Bedford Green House I, the first phase of this two-part development is due for completion in December 2021.

All apartments will be affordable for families whose income is 60 percent or less of the area median income. Supportive unit residents will have access to a rental subsidy funded through the Empire State Supportive Housing Initiative and administered by the New York State Office of Mental Health.

Fifty-five apartments will be reserved for seniors age 62 and older through New York City’s quality and affordability zoning amendment and the provision of independent senior affordable housing.

Residential amenities will include a library and study center, free high-speed Internet access in each unit, and a backyard shared with Bedford Green House I. ,
