The company Sunmaxx, which specializes in the production of photovoltaic-thermal (PVT) solar modules and is based in Dresden, has started building a new automated module factory in Saxony.
Location and capacity
The new facility will be located on the existing 4,000 meter plot of land.2 in Ottendorf-Okrilla, near Dresden, Germany. According to the company’s own data, this new space is consolidated as the largest PVT production center in the world, with a capacity to produce up to 50 MW, which translates into about 120,000 solar panels per year.
A revolutionary technology
The photovoltaic-thermal technology represents a fusion between thermal management, which is often used in the automotive sector, and the consolidated solar technology. Thanks to this unique combination, Sunmaxx has created the most economically efficient PVT modules, achieving a total efficiency of 80%.
Specifically, its flagship module, the premium PX-1, was certified by the prestigious Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (Fraunhofer ISE) in Germany in March 2023. This module, with dimensions of 1750 mm long- on and 1140 mm wide, has a power of 400 W and an electrical efficiency of 20%.
Expand future prospects
Currently, repairs and preparations are being made at the plant to put the machinery into production. Jiri Springer, CTO of Sunmaxx, stated that “The demand for our modules is growing rapidly, and that is why we want to increase our production capacity as soon as possible.“.
Although they plan to open the first production line this year, the site offers opportunities for expansion, which could reach a capacity of several hundred MW per year in the near future.
A green commitment
Sunmaxx works with the goal of completely decarbonizing the supply of heat and electricity in buildings, neighborhoods and industrial areas. With production planned for 2023, they will be able to supply about 5,000 homes. In the long term, the company aims to reach the full production capacity of up to 3 GW.
