Corporations, philanthropists offer $1 million cash prize for Australia’s COVID vaccine plan

There is a one million dollar prize for an Australian as part of a new initiative called the “Million Dollar Wax Campaign”.

The campaign will award prizes worth $4.1 million, with a big ticket item worth $1 million in cash on November 5.

Some 3,100 gift cards worth $1,000 will also be produced throughout October.

Funded by philanthropists and corporations, the campaign aims to raise national vaccination rates above 80 percent, a major reopening goal under the National Plan.

Craig Winkler of the Million Dollar Wax Alliance says the vaccine is not designed to persuade hesitant Australians to get the jab.

“The promotion only seeks to reward those who decide to vaccinate now, rather than wait, so that we can reduce the community impact of the COVID-19 pandemic,” he said in a statement on Sunday.

“The aim is to safely accelerate Australia’s COVID-19 vaccination program throughout the month of October.

“The faster we reach a nationally high vaccination rate, over 80 percent, the sooner we can all safely resume our full range of community and business activity.”

Australia’s vaccination rate has risen in recent months as supply issues have eased, with 79 per cent of the population over 16 receiving at least a first dose and 56 per cent receiving a double dose.

The federal government was considering incentives to encourage Australians to get the jab before the lockdown-inducing outbreak of the highly contagious Delta variant in NSW and Victoria.

The initiative is inspired by the Ohio ‘Wax-a-Million’ campaign, and Philanthropies Australia chief executive Jack Heath hopes his version will “save lives, reduce the burden on healthcare workers, and benefit the wider community.”

All Australian adults are eligible to enter the online contest, as long as they have received their first dose on or before 31 October.

Only those who are fully vaccinated by December 13, six weeks after the cut-off date, will be awarded.
