Cremonese surprise Napoli on penalties in Coppa Italia

NAPLES, Italy ( Associated Press) – Just three days after being named head coach, Davide Ballardini led his team to an upset victory. With 10 men, Cremonese knocked Napoli out of the Italian Cup on Wednesday.

Cremonese won the penalty shootout after playing extra time with 10 men. After winning the match which ended regular time in a 2-2 draw, the Lombardy team will face Roma in the next leg.

Napoli midfielder Stanislav Lobotka was the only player to miss a penalty. He sent the deflected ball to the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona in the rain.

It was Ballardini’s first game in charge for Cremonese, who signed on Sunday to replace Massimiliano Alvini, who was sacked after losing 11 in 18 league games.

Cremonese is bottom of Serie A, and faced the leaders, who thrashed Juventus 5-1 on Friday.

However, the visitors took a surprise lead after 18 minutes, thanks to a goal from Charles Pickel.

Napoli reversed the score in just three minutes. Brazil’s Juan Jesus took advantage of a ball that hit the crossbar to put Parthenopei close. Argentina’s Giovanni Simeone scored the second goal with a header.

The match was officiated by an all-female refereeing body, including whistleblower Maria Sole Ferrieri Caputi. This is the first time this has happened in a duel between two Serie A teams.

Felix Afena-Gyan equalized three minutes into extra time. Ferrieri Caputi sent off defender Leonardo Cernicola 10 minutes into extra time, but Cremonese saved going to a penalty, where Afena-Gyan scored the decisive goal.
