Provincial Directorate of Health of Santiago de Cuba confirmed the arrest of two employees at the Ambrosio Grillo Portuondo hospital in that area in an alleged case of human organ trafficking.
The arrest came after both men were found to be in possession of “two hearts of probable human origin”.
The information, published by the Santiago health institution on its social networks, responds to a complaint made by a Twitter user, who reported the arrest and conviction of a hospital employee for organ trafficking.
The company in its response indicated, “Indeed, two employees of the Reference Hospital, who work as eviscerator and occupational therapy, were arrested on December 9, 2022, for an alleged criminal act, in which Two hearts of probable human origin were seized.” Provincial Directorate of Health of Santiago de Cuba,
The case was reported on Twitter by user Yanis Estrada, who pointed out that an employee of the hospital, which is located near the famous Santuario del Cobre, was sentenced to 30 years in prison “upon learning that he was the deceased”. Removal of organ and body fat.
According to that user, the man removed the organs to “crush and sell” as food.

However in another tweet the same user clarifiedCiting an unnamed source, that “the amount of organs removed would not be sufficient for this type of commercial sale” and that the likely purpose of the removed organs “would be to perform religious rituals.”
For its part, the note from the health authorities does not mention any legal punishment for the act, and indicates that those involved “are subject to investigation by bodies of the National Revolutionary Police.”
It also states that a “Sector Commission” was formed to investigate the facts.
The incident has sparked a wave of outrage and comments on social networks, with many demanding an explanation of what happened and condemning those involved.
