Dad Bob Anderson recalls ‘incredible’ experience watching son Ian Anderson, Braves win World Series

As when their son played for the youth and school baseball teams, Bob and Karen Anderson befriend the families of their son’s current teammates.

And, on Tuesday night, at Minute Maid Park in Houston for Game 6 of the World Series, Anderson found himself sitting behind the family of Atlanta Braves pitcher Max Fried, his son Ian Anderson’s teammate.

He was not jealous of them.

“Just to see what they were doing, my wife and I kept looking at each other, and we were like, ‘Please, do this tonight so we don’t have to be like this last night,'” laughs one. Bob Anderson said Thursday in a phone interview with The Daily Gazette.

The next night Ian Anderson, a 23-year-old who grew up in Rexford and starred at Shenandoah High School, would have received the opening nod for the Braves against the Houston Astros in Game 7 of the Major League winner-take-all. Baseball’s top prize. As surprising and surreal for the Anderson parents – and the Capital Region community – to attempt to add another great effort to their son’s already sterling postseason resume, they head to the night after the game. Deeply preferred to celebrate. Try to put nerves to one side instead of 6 and fall asleep knowing about a Game 7 waiting for their son.

“It was incredible. Unforgettable. After the top of the ninth, he entered this tunnel area out of the stands to get us out of the way, and drove us to the field,” said Bob Anderson.

He watched the final three matches of the Braves’ 7-0 win on a TV Tuesday, then took to the field to celebrate with the team. Shortly thereafter, Bob Anderson tweeted a photo of father, son and the Commissioner’s Trophy which was taken on the field.

“Every baseball dad’s dream! World Series Champions!” read the text sent with a photo of Bob Anderson, who played baseball in Siena and later won over 300 games coaching at his alma mater, Charlotte, for 20 years, the final watched his Sabers win the Class B State Championship.

The celebrations on the ground went on for a long time, but the party went on for a long time.

“We all went back to the team hotel, and they had a ballroom with food, drinks, music — it was crazy,” said Bob Anderson, who said he found pieces of confetti in his sneakers on Thursday morning, post- The festivities were left over from the game. “All the players were there with their families. My wife and I left at 3:30, and it was still going strong. “

Not so much.

“My wife and I are still tired,” said Bob Anderson, “but it’s a good exhaustion.”

And for good reason. While Ian Anderson’s other family members and friends were able to make a few games during the Braves’ championship run, Bob and Karen Anderson were in attendance for the team’s final 14 playoff games. Between the Braves’ National League Division Series-clinching victory and the National League Championship Series beginning in Atlanta, Bob and Karen Anderson moved to the capital area for a few days, but otherwise stayed in Houston or Los Angeles hotels, or their The son and his longtime girlfriend Audrey Schaefer’s apartment – the Shenandoah graduate – near the Braves’ home ballpark for more than three weeks.

“We made it count. We made 10 flights,” said Bob Anderson, a retired teacher whose wife Karen was born in Amsterdam, grew up in East Greenbush and was a nursery-school teacher in Clifton Park before retiring. Been flying for a while.”

Overall, during the Braves’ 2021 postseason run, Ian Anderson started four games. In 17 innings, the 6-foot-3 right-handed batsman scored three earned runs and dismissed 16 batsmen. In Game 3 of the World Series, Ian Anderson started and played five no-hit innings before he was ruled out of a game, with the Braves winning 2–0 and Anderson taking the win. Anderson dismissed four batsmen, scored three runs and hit one in his World Series debut. Anderson was the first starting pitcher to record at least five no-hit innings in a World Series game after Don Larson pitched a perfect game for the New York Yankees in 1956.

The baseball Ian Anderson pitched in Game 3 was one of the items from this year’s World Series that was saved and sent to display at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown.

“I was living and dying with every pitch,” Bob Anderson said of the opening innings of Game 3. “But I could tell that his makeover was working, he was mixing in [curveball] And his velocity was there. So I felt good and was able to rest after that first innings.”

There is little time to rest for Ian Anderson. The Braves’ celebration hasn’t really stopped after winning their first championship since 1995, and the franchise’s championship parade is on Friday. Bob Anderson said that he would go to Rotterdam to see it on TV with his mother, Beverly Anderson.

3 overall selection in the 2016 MLB draft, a selection Shenendhova made just days before wrapping up the Class AA state championship in her senior year when she was playing with teammates that included twin brother Ben Anderson. — who is now a pitcher in the Texas Rangers organization — and current NBA player Kevin Heuter to head coach Greg Cristodulu’s schedule. Ian Anderson made his MLB debut last year and after being called up at the end of August he recorded a 3-2 record, 1.95 ERA and dismissed 41 batsmen in 32 1-3 innings. In the 2020 playoffs, which ended for the Braves with the NLCS defeat to the Los Angeles Dodgers, Anderson had a 0.96 ERA and dismissed 24 batsmen in 18 2-3 innings.

This year, Anderson was 9-5 with a 3.58 ERA during the regular season. He dismissed 124 batsmen in 128 1-3 innings.

Along the way, Bob Anderson said that his family appreciated the support shown by the capital region for their son. Bob Anderson’s phone often resonates with messages from well-wishers for Ian Anderson’s latest pitching effort, but the past few days in particular have been draining his cell phone battery.

Bob Anderson said, “The support we have received from the field, friends and family for Ian has been awesome.” “It’s just been great.”
