Dakota County investigators seek clues about fires in or near parks

The Dakota County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a string of suspected fires in and around local parks.

Dan Bianconi, a Captain with the Dakota County Sheriff’s Office, said most of the fires — about six — were located in the Lone Rock Trail area in Rosemount. All the fires took place within a week and a half, with the last fire on August 19 around Shar’s Bluff Trail, northwest of Hastings.

Bianconi said, “It was very suspicious, and we have some circumstances and some evidence …

He said no major structures were damaged in the fire.

“It’s hard to believe that as dry as it has been, that it didn’t become a very serious condition. For the most part, the damage was relatively contained and didn’t hit anything super valuable,” Bianconi said.

He said the sheriff’s office has not received security footage of the incidents, but has sent some of the collected items for forensic examination.

To help prevent other fires, Bianconi said the sheriff’s office has increased patrols and added surveillance cameras to these areas.

Sheriff’s investigators say if you see anything suspicious, contact 911. Anyone with information about the fire is asked to contact the Sheriff’s Office at 651-438-4700 or use the online tip line. www.co.dakota.mn.us/LawJustice/Tips.
