Medical professionals advised the Olympic athlete that it was safe to abstain from skating this weekend – and ITV confirmed he will no longer compete in Sunday’s show.

An ITV spokesperson said: “During rehearsals for this Sunday’s show, Kai fell on the ice and was injured and therefore will not be performing on this weekend’s show.”

Kai said: “It’s an unfortunate accident. I trained and worked hard with Tippi to perform this weekend.

“For me, as an athlete, I’m used to things like this where you get injured and can’t compete.

“I’m all the more sad for Tippi, he’s worked hard so not being able to skate is obviously upsetting.

“We both really wanted to do this number, it’s a great performance and we put a lot of effort into it.

“I was so happy and excited when they were skating last weekend. I was watching and couldn’t wait to skate this Sunday. I’ll cheer everyone up there!”

The silver medalist won Great Britain’s first BMX Olympic medal last year.

Speaking before the show started, Kai said: “When I auditioned I connected it to roller-skating, so I think I did pretty well… Rest assured, he’s not really that bad if I fall, I’m fearless enough.”

He continued: “I think I can win Dancing on Ice. I’d love to see if I can make the final because, like I said, I’m very competitive. You know what? I’m in the final. I want to make a place!”

Meanwhile, Rachel Stevens has opened up about her big return to Dancing on Ice.

Rachel fell on the same wrist several times, before suffering a painless fracture at the last minute that prevented her from being on the ice.

While she has managed to rehearse her routine, she has only been back on the ice since Monday, and was not allowed to heal for six weeks at the rink for her injury.

The former S Club 7 singer injured her wrist in December, and was unable to return to the ice for six weeks.

Now that all is well, she and Brendin are set to face their debut on the ice this weekend, while revealing that getting back on track has been “difficult.”

Speaking on This Morning on Friday, Rachel told hosts Dermot O’Leary and Alison Hammond how she was doing, and how she was preparing for her first performance for the country.

She said: “It’s been eventful, that’s for sure. We’ve been training with the ice a lot in the lead-up to the show,” revealing that it was Monday that she was finally able to skate.

Brendin said: “It was good, we did a lot of training off the ice and it translated best when we came back.”

Rachel said of coming to the show last weekend but not going on the ice: “I was so nervous, I thought, what’s up? I’m not even skating, but the disappointment is not being able to get on the ice.” had done.

“It’s been six weeks or more from this, so it’s been a bit of a pressure to come back on Monday and learn the routine.”

Dancing on Ice 2022 continues Sunday at 6:30 pm on ITV.
