Daughter of Mexican politician and writer Diego Rivera passes away

MEXICO CITY ( Associated Press) – Guadalupe Rivera Marín, lawyer, politician, writer and diplomat, daughter of famed Mexican painter Diego Rivera, died Sunday at the age of 98, the artist’s museum announced on its official Twitter account.

In a statement to express its condolences, the National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature highlighted Rivera Marín’s “extensive historical and political work” on Mexico.

Rivera Marín always said that one of his main aspirations was to distance his personality from that of his father, who was an artist affiliated with the Communist Party and one of the founders of Mexican Muralism, a movement that changed the way it was understood a century ago. Revolution was brought. Art. Art.

But he could not help but present himself in another way. “I am the daughter of Diego Rivera and it has bothered me all my life,” she explained to journalist Alberto Tavira in 2018 in an interview on ADN television.

As she admitted, she always liked politics because her father used to take her to party meetings when she was little. His mother, the painter’s second wife, was a Mexican model.

However, Rivera Marín wanted to move away from her father’s ideology and not only fell in love with the son of the founder of the conservative National Action Party, but for decades she was associated with the Institutional Revolutionary Party, the organization that governed Mexico. Was. 70 years of the 20th century… She was a deputy, senator and ambassador with the PRI.

She wrote books about her father and Frida Kahlo, the artist who was a companion of the muralist and with whom Rivera Marin lived for some time. His work also includes a novel on a controversial subject he was passionate about, extraterrestrial life, which he linked to the Olmec culture. This made some members of PRI crazy about him, he confessed in the above interview.

In the years that followed, she was resigned to living in the shadow of her father, who died in her arms, but said she was content just the way she was.

“I am … very happy with what I managed to do, some women have been deputy, senator, ambassador three times,” she told Tavira. “My life was worth a lot”
