Davidovich: “I am ready to be the leader of Spain”

Alejandro Davidovich (Rincón de la Victoria, 24 years old) is the emerging number one in Spain for the Davis Cup group stage. A role that comes to him unexpectedly after the absence of Alcaraz, who has only one game so far in this event, but which he calmly admits to his presence in AS before the debut on Wednesday against Czech Republic.

How did they accept the loss of Alcaraz?

We respect your decision. He played a lot on the American tour. We have good players who are having a good season, and despite the loss of Charly, there is a good team that will qualify for us. Finally we play at home too, which adds up.

Last year he said he didn’t know if he was ready for Davis and now he has to take on the role of Spain’s number one.

It is true that in Marbella I may not be fully ready to compete at a good level, and there are players ahead of me in the rankings. This year I did well. I’ve only had one top-level week, in Toronto, but I’ve already performed in other tournaments. I think I am ready to face the future. I’ve played on a lot of center courts and that adds up as well.

It comes in great shape. Semifinals in Toronto, the big time when they lost it was against Djokovic, Paul and Rune…

We can say that this is a step forward, but there is still a lot to do before I am satisfied with what I have done. It is clear that we are slowing down. I believe that I have more to give to people and I am slowly building that.

“I think I still have a lot to give people”

Is next year seen as a year of consolidation of the circuit’s elite?

There are many tournaments left this year. We didn’t think for a millisecond about next year. I’m just thinking about playing the Davis Cup with Spain. The next thing is to go to China or whatever, but now they are concentrating on qualifying for the finals in Malaga.

How important is Davis to your season?

Apparently a lot. This is an illusion from childhood. I will debut as number one and it becomes a reality at home. This is a reward for the year I did, and to enjoy it with the fans in favor is something that makes me very happy. I really want to face what’s coming. There will be fights with other teams but I am ready for it.

If I get the pass, I will literally play at home, in Malaga.

I can’t ask for more, even though I’ve played in Marbella, which seems brutal to me.

Have you thought about a possible matchup against Djokovic?

Djokovic is Djokovic. I don’t think it’s necessary to elaborate further. He won a Grand Slam again, but it’s not just my point that matters, everything matters. I will do anything to get mine. I don’t know who the opponent is.

“Djokovic is Djokovic. I will do my best to get my point across. I don’t care who the opponent is.”

How did Ferrer fit into the team?

I am very much like him, we joke a lot. It was the first time I trained to play singles with Davis and he gave me a lot of advice. He came first and won many games, which I saw on TV. You should listen to him because he will give you very good advice.

On a personal level, what will leave you happy in Valencia?

As the team passes. It doesn’t matter if I win or lose.
