Davis backs Lakers with 99 points in 2 games

Anthony Davis is healthy. And his stats too.

It is not a coincidence that the Los Angeles Lakers are playing at the level that can be expected of their stellar cast.

With 99 points over his last two games — his most in a two-season regular season — Davis is doing something in league history that’s been done before.

He made 40 of 57 field goals in those games. His 44-point performance on Friday in Milwaukee was preceded by a 55-point performance on Sunday in Washington.

“My body feels great. In the gym, working on our game, we’re closer as a team, so everything works for us now,” Davis said.

The Lakers are 8-2 in their last 10 games. During that stretch, the record is 7–2 when Davis plays.

Prior to this stint, he was just 7–20 in Davis’ last 27 appearances. Much of this was because he or LeBron James or both were sidelined by injury or playing through illness.

Davis, limited to 60 games over the past two seasons, has finally regained his health and level of play. He is averaging 28.6 points, leads the league with 12.8 rebounds and is shooting 59% of his shots.

Those three statistics aim to be career bests for the eight-time All-Star basketball player who is fast becoming an MVP candidate.

“First and foremost is his health,” said coach Darwin Hamm. “I think he feels great. Your body feels good. He’s had some back problems before and he’s worked to overcome them. And you can see it on his face and in his game. He It’s fun to play without the pain.”

The Lakers play game two of a six-tour, which continues this Tuesday in Cleveland. It will be a homecoming for former Ohio Cavaliers star James, who is now 1,000 points away from catching Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as the leading scorer in NBA history.
