Davos leaders say it’s up to managers to prevent silent resignations

Managers and business leaders have a responsibility to avoid quiet abandonment after the pandemic radically changes working conditions, according to a panel of managers and human resources professionals at the World Economic Forum.

“It’s up to top-down leaders to solve this problem. We need to communicate very differently,” Vimeo CEO Anjali Sood said Tuesday in Davos. ,

Silent resignation was coined during the pandemic to describe people who, working from home and feeling estranged from employers, quietly went on to contribute only the bare minimum, prioritizing their personal lives. About half of American workers meet those conditions, according to a Gallup poll released in September.

According to Adam Grant, an organizational psychologist at the University of Pennsylvania, the phenomenon is a continuation of the so-called Great Resignation, a term used to describe the wave of departures by younger employees, especially after the pandemic.

Many workers have wondered, “Given what I get from my employer, what is an appropriate way to reciprocate?” Grant said.

It’s up for debate whether this incident is reprehensible laziness or an act of self-defense after hustle culture hasn’t paid off. While employers and employees are naturally on different sides of this argument, there is growing support for the idea that bosses should avoid internal resignations, and that bad managers jeopardize morale, commitment, and performance.

Grant said many companies conduct exit interviews with employees who leave during that time, a good idea, but “I would prefer employers to conduct entry interviews or continue interviews.”

According to Thierry Delaporte, chief executive of Indian multinational IT Wipro Ltd, giving workers mobility and visibility into how they can progress in their careers is also key to avoiding silent job exits.

“It’s an incredibly important aspect to maintain not only the body but also the heart, and we want both,” Delaporte said.
