Debra Messing regrets Kim Kardashian. Tint from SNL: “She Was Awesome”

If Debra Messing had to explain every bad tweet she wrote, we’d be here for a while.

But earlier this week, she took the time to address one specific message from her very active Twitter account, which was directed to Kim Kardashian West ahead of Saturday Night Live’s reality star debut earlier this month.

Alumni of “Will & Grace” questioned the credibility of Kardashian West in a shady tweet in September that some fans deemed overly dastardly.

Why Kim Kardashian? Messing wrote… “I mean, I know she is a cultural icon, but SNL usually has hosts who are performers who come to promote a movie, TV show or release of an album. Am I missing something? “

During Monday’s episode of The Tamron Hall Show, Messing reacted to the backlash to the tweet, explaining that she was simply “confused” about her hosting choices and never intended to judge Kardashian West.

“Well, I wasn’t going to troll her, and you know, if someone took it that way, I’m sorry. This was never my intention. She is this phenomenon. I mean, she’s a cultural icon, ”Messing said.

“I am the one who grew up on SNL. I love comedy and for decades they had this formula, ”she continued. “And I noticed that they changed the formula, and I thought, ‘Oh, is she having a new TV show? “Does she have a book coming out?” Is she in the cinema? And nothing came of it. Actually, her TV show has just ended. So I just got confused. “

The actor said that part of her confusion about hosting Kardashian West was due to Messing “not having his finger on the pulse of pop culture.”

“So I thought,“ Okay. Was she doing something from the outside that I didn’t know about because I was so focused on activism? “And it’s understandable that this has been interpreted in different ways,” she said.

Ultimately, Messing said, Kardashian West’s performance on October 9 won her over.

“I watched her and thought she was amazing and rooted for her,” she said. “If you know me and follow me, then you know that I am constantly supporting women. I support women. So, you know, I hope people understand that I never intended to do this. “

Kardashian West has yet to respond to Messing’s comments, but has received rave reviews for her slyly brutal opening monologue, in which she poked fun at herself and her famous family. The episode also gave NBC a much-needed rating jump after its season premiere, when it was at its all-time low.

In an Instagram post following this episode, Kardashian West called her foray into comedy “one of the best experiences of my career” and praised the cast and crew for their hard work on the episode.

SNL alumnus Jason Sudeikis will host Saturday with musical guest Brandi Carlisle.
