DeGrom and Rangers agree to $185 million contract

ARLINGTON, Texas ( Associated Press) – Free agent pitcher Jacob deGrom and the Texas Rangers agreed to a $185 million, five-year contract on Friday.

The star, who has won the Cy Young Award twice, leaves the New York Mets after nine seasons, the last two cut short by injuries.

DeGrom, who made his first start last season in early August, finished 5–4 with a 3.08 ERA in 11 starts.

The pitcher helped the Mets reach the post-season and then opted out of his contract to become a free agent.

The Rangers announced the contract signing Friday night after the 34-year-old deGrom passed his physical.

A person familiar with the deal disclosed the financial terms of the contract to The Associated Press. The source requested anonymity because the club had not yet announced details of the deal.

“We are excited that Jacob deGrom has decided to become a player with the Texas Rangers,” executive vice president and general manager Chris Young said in a statement.

“For several seasons, Jacobs has been an outstanding pitcher in the Major Leagues, and he will provide us with a premier pitcher at the top of our rotation. One of our main goals this offseason is to strengthen our starting staff, and we look forward to that. Adding one of the best.”

Texas finished 68–94 the previous season and then hired Bruce Bochy as a new manager.

The Rangers have finished their last six seasons with losing records, their longest stretch since the team moved from Washington in 1972.

The previous offseason, the Rangers invested heavily in free agents, signing Corey Seaguer to a $325 million, 10-year contract and second baseman Marcos Sieman to a $175 million, seven-year contract.
