Mexican director Guillermo del Toro won his third Oscar with “Pinocchio”, a Netflix product, as the best animated film, at the Oscar Awards gala this Sunday at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles.
Del Toro’s “The Shape of Water” has already been awarded in the Best Picture and Best Direction categories, in addition to being nominated for “Pan’s Labyrinth” and “Avenue of Lost Souls.”
The show started at 9:00 am with a story about the main nominees by the guest comedian Jimmy Kimmel, who brought laughter to the audience with several jokes about them. Classic Oscars and American humor, where they constantly run the boundaries of humor and humor.
In a lengthy prologue, Kimmel shared a joke about James Cameron and Tom Cruise missing the evening: “The two people who most insisted that we return to the theaters today are not.”
“If something violent happens, do what you did last year: Nothing,” said the comedian about Will Smith’s slap to Chris Rock, as he picked up the return of 23 categories to the gala, which was broadcast live: “All the categories are here, because that’s how the community wanted it, It’s not like that on television.”
The new effort is the highest film institution in the United States, whose awards have often been clouded by the denial of public and industry action in aspects that go beyond cinema.
The OscarsSoWhite 2015 movement called for more and more representation of their race; the #MeToo born in 2018 denounced sexist abuse in the industry. The historic mistake of Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty who declared the second winner for Best Picture “La La Land” instead of the one who added the most votes “Luna” has given weight to the end of the 2017 ceremonies.
Experiments with form also showed the loss of course: there were galas without a speaker or a speaker, rather with multiple hosts; Changes were attempted in the historical and logical order of the awards ceremonies, so that the greatest number of the best films in one year would not be closed to be delivered; there was also an initiative to reduce the total duration of the gala by suppressing the “live” technical articles. They didn’t like any of the options and this Sunday’s Oscars will stick to the classic format.
