Democrats are not trying to revive the child tax credit separately from Restore Better

WASHINGTON – About 36 million households with children received monthly cash payments last year but will not receive them in January this year, and Democrats are making little effort to change that.

The party had previously hoped to continue paying better under the Recovery Act, but progress on legislation stalled last month after Senator Joe Manchin (DW.Va.) announced it would not support it.

“I hope and expect that we can come to an agreement with the Senate, including Joe Manchin and [Democratic Arizona Sen.] Kirsten Cinema around the Rebuild Better Act, Rep. Hakim Jeffries (DN.Y.), a member of the Democratic House’s steering group, told HuffPost on Tuesday.

But the Senate turned its attention to voting rights this week, with no plans to vote on “better than it was” anytime soon. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (DN.Y.) said last month that he still intends to put the bill to the vote, but without a breakthrough in negotiations, Republicans and Manchin will simply vote against it.

Jeffries said the House Appropriations Committee is looking for ways to revive the payments, but Committee Chair Rep. Rosa DeLauro, Connecticut, told reporters on Tuesday that she would like to extend the Child Tax Credit under the Recover Better program. …

The big problem is that Manchin isn’t just opposed to the Rebuild Better Than It was – he also particularly dislikes the child tax credit, telling his colleagues that parents spend monthly cash payments on drugs… Thus, a separate child tax credit bill would likely lack the 50 Democratic vote in the Senate.

Democrats created the American Rescue Plan Monthly Benefit last year, increasing the annual value of the Child Tax Credit to $ 3,600, making it fully reimbursable even to families with no income, and instructing the IRS to reimburse the advance monthly. the foundation.

The vast majority of American parents received $ 300 a month for each child under 6 and $ 250 for each child under 18. said HuffPost they began to rely on payments.

However, the American Rescue Plan provides benefits only until the end of 2021. Democrats said it would be easy to extend payments beyond this deadline as Republicans dare not cause child poverty to rise again.

Democrats viewed the Child Tax Credit as a legacy-defining achievement that would be loved by parents as much as Social Security retirement benefits would be loved by older people. Democrats did not expect any of them to refuse to support politics, in addition to all-out opposition from the Republicans.

“The Child Tax Credit has been instrumental in lifting families out of poverty, and it is a key program in Rebuild Better Than It was,” Rep. Pete Aguilar, Calif., Said Tuesday. “But on the 15th of this month, we understand that families will not receive this benefit, and we urge the Senate to return to the negotiating table to address this issue and ensure that these families receive the benefits they need.”
