Depression and suicide, says the Ministry of Health in Coahuila, which is being fought against

The Coahuila Ministry of Health, in coordination with the municipal governments and educational institutions, has managed to reinforce actions in the field of mental health through the training of personnel specialized in psychological care and assistance.

In this regard, the Secretary of Health of the State, Roberto Bernal, explained that through the Deputy Director for Prevention and Health Promotion, various strategies are being adopted to make people aware of mental health care and what to do if you suffer from it. “According to WHO, depression is a common mental disorder. It is estimated that 5 percent of adults worldwide suffer from depression. It can become a serious health problem when it occurs repeatedly, is of moderate to severe intensity, and especially when thoughts of endangering one’s life arise,” he explained.

They also state that a depressive episode is identified when the patient experiences extreme sadness, irritability, feelings of emptiness, or loss of pleasure or interest in activities most days, almost every day, for at least two weeks. .

“There are many other symptoms, including difficulty concentrating, extreme guilt or low self-esteem, lack of hope for the future, thoughts of death or suicide, sleep disturbances, changes in appetite or weight, and obvious fatigue or a feeling of lack . energy”.

Given this panorama, Ángel Alarcón Cortés, doctor of mental health and state head of the Coahuila Health Secretariat, explained that the unit has implemented Code 100, a strategy focused on treating patients with depression and potentially suicidal behavior .

“In September 2022, in coordination with the UADEC, the State Education Secretariat, the Saltillo City Council and the State Attorney General’s Office, the ‘Together for Suicide Prevention’ agreement was signed, with which the training of health workers is strengthened Approach to neighborhoods and communities with a certain event,” he said.

As part of this strategy, Alarcon Cortés said that there are specialists dedicated to psychological care and support in person, permanently and by telephone, to whom the population can contact if they see indicators of depressive episodes.
