He assured that the said proposal would be tabled in the National Congress next Tuesday.
Mental health has become one of the biggest global pandemics and, of course, one of the most damaging to society. Depression, anxiety, high suicide rates, suffering, increased medical licenses, increased violence, insecurity and a range of symptoms present in girls, boys, youth, adults and older adults leave Chile as a country in which mental health has become serious.
“We need to work specifically so that care reaches those who need it on time. We have been watching for years how Chile’s mental health deteriorates more and more, getting worse after the pandemic caused by COVID-19. And, although we have a president today who has made this issue one of his central concerns, we need to mobilize the will and take charge with genuine urgency – which is not enough for more. For this reason, next Tuesday we will present a draft proposal that seeks to create an Under Secretary of Mental Health for the Ministry of Health. District 15 MP Marta Gonzalez indicated.
For the legislator, the state of mental health in Chile should be a matter of public policy, which should be viewed widely; That is, from channeling more resources to prevention and treatment to creating an entire government framework that aims to address the issue from a variety of sources.
“Mental health has become a national emergency, as its deterioration has dangerous effects on millions of Chileans, regardless of age or social status. Undoubtedly, there are those who are more likely to take action to treat or prevent related illnesses. But it is also true that this is not the reality of the vast majority of Chileans, creating gaps and dramatic and unwanted consequences that harm us as a country. and society, in the most diverse sectors. There is the issue to which we must contribute in each social space: in educational establishments, in health centres, in the world of work and in the different cultures that exist in the country and this, obviously, cannot be solved by separate actions . and with a focused budget”, confirmed Gonzalez.
“Mental health is a national issue”
According to deputy Marta Gonzalez, the idea of creating an undersecretary of mental health “has no political colour” and assured that he already has the support of allies in parliament to carry out the initiative. “On Tuesday we will introduce this proposal to Congress and we will create a bank for mental health in Chile. However, it is a purpose that we have distanced ourselves from this deputation and we therefore invite the people of Chile to join us in this heartfelt and much-needed demand. Mental health is a national issue and we will work tirelessly on it.
The legislator’s proposal was announced at Plaza Los Heroes de Rancagua in the O’Higgins area, together with a group of social leaders from the area and in the company of councilors from different districts of District 15.
Ipsos, in its study conducted under the framework of Mental Health Day, revealed that 62 percent of those surveyed reported the matter as a matter of concern. Along the same lines, mental health thermometers in Chile – produced by the ACHS and the UC Center for Longitudinal Studies – showed that 34.6 percent of the group displayed symptoms associated with the possible presence of mental health problems, with women having higher figures than men. . And, while more studies emerge, the panorama doesn’t change. Chile is sick and urgent measures are needed to cure it.
