José Benavidez, David’s father and coach, explained the differences between Saul “Canelo” Álvarez’s victory over Caleb Planta and his son.
“I beat Canelo”, José considered the conflict between Planta and Saul in November 2021 in an interview with the YouTube channel, FightHype. “I didn’t beat David. Like I said, Canelo was one punch and that was the punch that hurt him and knocked him out, but David beat him. It was proven today that David is ready to fight anyone at 168, fight Canelo and that’s the fight everyone wants to see.” .
Benavidez took the victory over Caleb by unanimous decision with scores of 117-111, 116-112 and 115-113. Although he had the former IBF champion in trouble in the last round, it did not absolve him from the knockout and he managed to survive 12 rounds.
Because of the punishment he received, Planta was to be admitted to a hospital, but he was released because he had nothing.
While in the case of Saúl, Caleb moved in November 2021, with four world titles in the category at stake. Álvarez took the victory by knockout in the eleventh round and became the first world champion at 168 pounds.

Although David asked Canelo to give him a chance at the world titles, José said that he already had a contract with several of the best boxers in the category to be crowned champions.
“We have a contract with three of the strongest,” commented José Benavidez. “Boo Boo (Demetrius) Andrade, David Morrell, (Jermall) Charlo is there.”
However, José Benavidez ruled out Jermall Charlo as his next possible opponent, since he has been inactive for the past two years.
“Not two years,” he said. “I have never faced David Benavidez, he is a champion, but he has not defended the belt for two years. He had to drink a bit. Everywhere I see him, he is drunk. He is known to everyone.”
