Dinesh Karthik, Harshal Patel, Axar Patel set new record for India during 2nd T20I against Ireland

India crashed out of a 2-0 series win against Ireland after a narrow four-run win in Dublin on Tuesday, but their performance raised some concerns. The first was India’s middle and lower order batting, with 19 runs between six batsmen. India’s total of 225/7 was mainly due to two innings – Deepak Hooda’s century and Sanju Samson’s 77 off 42 balls. The other dangerous possibility is the performance of their bowlers. Sure, it was a small ground with a good batting pitch, but the fact that four of India’s six bowlers, including Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Harshal Patel, conceded 10 runs per over, is not much expected.

Also, Dinesh Karthik, Axar Patel and Harshal were dismissed for ducks. Not just any duck but all three were out for a golden duck. Karthik delivers his first ball to the keeper, followed by Axar, who slams the ball into the neck of deep mid-wicket on the next bowled by Craig Young. Harshal was the last Indian wicket to fall as he was clean bowled by Mark Adair. This means that yesterday’s match was the first instance of three Indian batsmen getting out on the first ball in T20Is. India is the only team to have 3 or more golden ducks in T20Is with a total of over 200.

A total of 34 instances have been recorded in T20Is when a team has dismissed three or more batsmen for a first-ball duck. The total record for most first-ball ducks in a match for a team in T20Is is 5 – Netherlands against Ireland in Abu Dhabi on 18 October 2021. Among Test playing nations, this was the 12th such instance in T20Is.

However, this is not the first time that three Indian batsmen have been dismissed for ducks in the same match (golden ducks have been excluded). Earlier, India have faced three ducks in an innings on four separate occasions in T20Is; However, they have never registered four. This first happened in 2011 against England. The next was during a T20I against South Africa in 2016. The 2016 Asia Cup tie against Pakistan also saw three batsmen get out without an account, while the most recent Ireland tie was in Sri Lanka last year.
