Djokovic eliminates Schwartzman and advances to 4th in France

PARIS ( Associated Press) — Defending champion Novak Djokovic advanced to the Roland Garros quarterfinals for the 16th time in his career on Sunday, where he could meet a familiar foe: Rafael Nadal.

The world number one Serbian recovered quickly from falling behind early in the second set to cruise to a 6-1, 6-3, 6-3 victory over 15th-seeded Argentine Diego Schwartzman on Court Susana Lenglen.

Djokovic has won all 12 sets he has played so far in this year’s tournament and has lost a total of just 30 games in four matches.

He trailed 3-0 in the second set before winning seven straight games to take that set and take a 1-0 lead in the third.

Djokovic has reached the quarterfinals in Paris 13 years in a row. He won the title in 2016 and last year, part of his collection of 20 Grand Slam trophies. Only one man has won more: Nadal, with 21.

The Spaniard faces Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime.

Third-seeded Alexander Zverev will reach the quarterfinals at Roland Garros for the fourth time thanks to a 7-6 (11), 7-5, 6-3 win over 131st-ranked Spaniard Bernabé Zapata Miralles.

Zverev lost in the semifinals a year ago at the French Open. His best Grand Slam performance was as runner-up at the 2020 US Open.

The 25-year-old German will face the winner of the duel between the Spanish Carlos Alcaraz and the Russian Karen Khachanov in the quarterfinals.

Teenager Coco Gauff made her way to the quarterfinals at Roland Garros for the second year in a row by upsetting Belgium’s Elise Mertens 6-4, 6-0 on Court Philippe Chatrier.

US Open runner-up Leylah Fernandez also advanced with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 victory over Amanda Anisimova.

Italy’s Martina Trevisan beat Aliaksandra Sasnovich 7-6 (10), 7-5 to reach the quarterfinals at Roland Garros for the second time in three appearances.
