Doc Rivers recalls 2008 champion Celtics in terms of getting Sixers to jelly

MILWAUKEE, WIS.–The Philadelphia 76ers will only have 24 games to jell and get James Harden on the same page as Joel Embiid, Tobias Harris, and everybody else as they move forward with such a drastic change in their roster.

The Sixers moved important rotational pieces such as Seth Curry and Andre Drummond along with Ben Simmons to the Brooklyn Nets in order to acquire Harden and Paul Millsap. The Sixers held Harden out through the All-Star break as he continues to nurse his hamstring injury, but he is set to make his debut on Friday.

As Philadelphia gets set to embark on this new roster and contend for a championship, coach Doc Rivers recalled his time with the Boston Celtics. They made huge moves by bringing in Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen to join forces with Paul Pierce and Rajon Rondo and they were able to win a title in their first season together.

“We were amazing out of the block, that group, and it was the buy-in,” said Rivers on Feb. 17 when the Sixers were in Milwaukee. “We were lucky. The luckiest thing that ever happened that year was we had training camp in Rome. It was just luck. It was planned before we did that, that was awesome because they were forced together, they spent time together. We’re not gonna have that.”

The Sixers are obviously in a much different situation. That Celtics team had a training camp and 82 games to figure themselves out before they got to the playoffs. Philadelphia is going to have the 24 games and then that’s it.

“We have to figure out a way of growing,” Rivers added. “It’s easy when we start and things are good, but there’s gonna be some tough patches. How we get through that as a group, do we trust what we keep doing? There’s a lot of stuff that we can’t predict.”

Another potential issue that Rivers might have to run into is getting everybody on the same page in terms of the new hierarchy. The top two options are obviously going to be Harden and Embiid. Then, Harris, Tyrese Maxey, and everybody else will have to fall into place.

“Whenever you make a trade, especially, I don’t know how to word it, an upper-tier trade where the ball distribution is gonna change, then you absolutely have to get guys back and understand their roles and roles change, obviously, ” Rivers added. “Guys go from the second option to the third option, guys go from starting to the bench because of the way you do things so absolutely you have to get guys all bought in.”
