DoD and NSF Kick-Off Resilient and Intelligent NextG System Program

The National Science Foundation (NSF) on April 18 announced the awards for the “Resilient and Intelligent NextG Systems” (RINGS) program. The Rings event officially kicks off today. The RINGS program is NSF’s most significant effort so far to engage government, academia and industry partners in a joint research programme. This program seeks to accelerate research, foster innovation, and enhance America’s competitiveness in NextG networking and computing technologies. The Innovate Beyond 5G (IB5G) program in the Office of the Under Secretary of Research and Engineering contributed $6 million toward 41 research projects totaling more than $37 million.

DoD sees this partnership as integral to the larger mission of inviting the academic/non-profit research community to the table. By contributing novel solution concepts that address critical operational priorities and communications challenges, these communities will leave their mark on the next generation of network technologies supporting our warships today and in the future. Private sector partners in this effort include Apple, Ericsson, Google, IBM, Intel, Microsoft, Nokia, Qualcomm, and VMware.

“The Department of Defense has a significant interest in promoting the continued adoption and adaptation of advanced wireless technologies as it seeks to integrate these within the development of MIL network concepts,” said Dr. Sumit Roy, Program Director, IB5G. “The 5G-to-NextG initiative is particularly pleased to support efforts such as Rings that foster public and private sector collaboration in continuous research, development and prototyping that emphasize secure and resilient network operational concepts and their evaluation. give.”

The RINGS projects will explore many aspects of wireless network systems relevant to DoD, including advanced software/hardware features for secure operation for client devices, edge network elements, emerging network architectures affecting RAN and agile B5G MIL networks of the future.
