Dog leads rescuers to owner who fell 70 feet from the ridge

A dog named Saul is being credited with leading rescuers to his owner after a 53-year-old man fell 70 feet off a ridge in California’s Tahoe National Forest last week.

“At first we didn’t believe it because it looked like a movie,” Sgt. Dennis Hack of the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office of Search and Rescue told local news station KCRA.

According to a Facebook post by the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office of Search and Rescue, twenty-five volunteers set out to find the man, but “true credit” for locating him went to Saul.

Saul, who was described as a Border Collie in a Facebook post, was able to flag “two explorers” in “true ‘LASSIE’ fashion” and led them about 200 yards where the man was wearing a camouflage tarp. was lying on the ground covered in it.

The man who suffered non-life-threatening injuries was airlifted to the hospital. He was reunited with Saul, who had received much praise and feasts the next day.

Hack told the Times that he believes the search team may have eventually found the man on their own. But he recognized the great help that Saul gave them.

I[The man] Was very lucky that the dog sent our rescue personnel to him,” Hack told local news station KTVU. “Great work and skill by all involved.”
